Apple Hot Sauce Recipe
Have a ton of apples from a tree that you don't know what to do with? Like savory? Check out this yummy apple hot sauce recipe that has some sweetness from your apples!
3-6 cups hot peppers (2-3 lbs)
1-2 white onions
1 cup of tomatoes
2 medium apples (peeled, cored, seeds removed, diced, about 2 cups)
1-2 cups apple cider vinegar or white vinegar
10-20 garlic cloves
⅓ cup / 2 oz mustard seed (optional)
1-2 tablespoons salt (use less if cutting back salt intake!)
¾ teaspoon turmeric
Wash peppers, remove stems. Put tomatoes, apples, garlic, onion and peppers into food processor, then spoon/pour into a large heavy-bottomed stock pot.
Add vinegar to pot, salt and turmeric to pot. Stir, bring to a boil, then turn the heat down and simmer for about an hour.
Ladle hot sauce into disinfected heated canning jars (size of choice, we like using half pints,) leaving ½ inch of headspace. Wipe jar rims, put the lids on the jars and screw on the bands. Then boil/process in a water bath or steam canner. Process jars for 15 minutes; increase time as needed for your altitude. Arrange a folded towel on the counter or table. Using a jar lifter, remove the jars and place them on the towel. Let the jars cool fully for at least 12 hours before moving. We like to remove the bands when storing to preserve bands for future use.
