Gardening by the Zodiac Signs

When it comes to planting in your garden, soil, sun and seasons aren't the only factors to consider. It turns out the the zodiac signs can be just as important. For the best results, they should be considered when choosing plants for your garden. 

What to plant in your garden according to your zodiac sign.  

 ARIES (March 21 to April 20) 

You are a fiery, energetic, and quick individual who likes spicy, invigorating plants and foods. Growing onion, garlic chives, basil, cayenne peppers, and paste tomatoes in the garden is easy for you and brings joy and excitement. This is the combination you put together often for your favorite dish: spaghetti sauce. Red is your color, as a brave soul, and any pepper of this hue attracts you. Hatch Red Hot chile, Jimmy Nardello sweet pepper, and fiery Red Bhut jolokia are particularly appealing. As the first sign of the zodiac, you love to pioneer and grow the newest pepper seed varieties like the new bright red Cow Horn Hot pepper.

 TAURUS (April 21 to May 20)

You are earthy and love to feel the garden under your feet. So, you kick off your shoes whenever possible and your garden preferences are also deeply rooted. Carrots, beets, and radishes appeal to you and flourish under your care. Taurus also likes the tried-and-true, so heirloom varieties of plants like NuMex Big Jim, Early Jalapeno, and Poblano grace your garden. With your heightened sense of taste and touch, you prefer comfort foods to faddish fare. Traditional Roma paste tomatoes, Cherokee Purple tomatoes and basil are always in your garden.  

 GEMINI (May 21 to June 20)

You are light and airy and enjoy plants that mimic your style. Cilantro and parsley are easy for you to grow and make your heart dance. You find yellow Lemon Spice Jalapeno peppers and Yellow Pear tomatoes particularly captivating, and dashes of this color can be found liberally in your yard. The Scotch Bonnet Yellow pepper brings a splash of yellow spice to your garden and recipes. Easy going Gemini appreciates medicinal herbs too with beautiful flowers—like lavender, echinacea, and nasturtium. Toss your nasturtium blossoms right in the salad bowl for an added dash of pizzazz. Salads with fresh picked lettuce and Sweet Million cherry tomatoes grace your evening meals because of the quickness of picking, washing, and eating it.

 CANCER (June 21 to July 22)

You are a sensitive soul that loves to feed and nourish itself and others, nutritious plants such as broccoli and carrots are near and dear to your heart. You find them easy to grow and will experiment with recipes for their use. You are ruled by the Moon, so tall corn stalks, sunflowers and watermelons fill the Cancer twilight garden with intriguing silhouettes and mystical magic. Hearty soups and rich casseroles are on your dinner table and heirloom Guajillo and Chile de Arbol peppers are garden staples for you. Your cabbage, zucchini, and tomatillo plants provide endless possibilities for all your hearty recipes.

 LEO (July 23 to August 22)

You have a sunny disposition, okra, and sunflowers adorn your garden and are quite easy for you to grow. Leos never do things halfheartedly, so massive and extensive displays of marigolds, and ornamental peppers like NuMex Twilight and NuMex Easter grace your front walkways and patio beds. As a Leo that loves the limelight you will always grow Carolina Reapers for your famous hot sauce. Your zest for living can be seen in the salsas and gazpachos dishes produced in your grandiose kitchen. Several vigorous Roma tomato plants will provide fruit for your salsa fever. Cucumbers, red bell peppers, serranos, basil, and parsley will also be within reach for your fresh gazpachos.

 VIRGO (August 23 to September 22)

You are an industrious soul, and your sign truly represents the harvest. Because you love all things that last or keep. beets are a big favorite here, as well as pumpkins and winter squashes. You are an ardent organizer; we expect to see neat, trimmed rows of corn, carrots, and highly productive beans of all kinds. Making the most out of your season Super Sweet 100 tomatoes provide you with a second burst of production as the summer cools and Hatch Red Medium Joe Parker matures to red for its second chile harvest of the season. Virgo enjoys a beautifully arranged garden with medicinal plants and herbs in perfectly aligned rows.  LIBRA (September 23 to October 22)

You enjoy beauty and flowers of all kinds abound in your garden. Echinacea purple coneflower, lavender, marigold, nasturtium and sunflowers all have their place. Color is important to you and tomatoes of all colors will be artfully placed throughout your decks and patios. Orange Kellogg’s Breakfast, pink German Johnson, purple Chocolate Cherry, red Mexico Midget, and the gold and red Isis Candy tomatoes are among your favorites. You always want to make a favorable impression with bright salads and grow mini bell peppers  for their assortment of colorful sweet peppers. Ornamental Patio Fire and Ice and Bulgarian Carrot peppers growing in pots and adorn your patio table. You are diplomatic and balanced so basil grows next to your tomatoes due to their harmonious relationship.

 SCORPIO (October 23 to November 22)

You always have a plan and make sure that successive plantings of snap peas and lettuce grace your gardens. You are the strongest member of the zodiac and thus are attracted to vigorous plants such as broccoli, which regrow when cut. Big red tomatoes like Big Beef appeal to you for the color red, and eggplants for their affinity with purple. Being sexy and passionate, you are captivated by Garden Peach tomatoes with their fuzzy skin and mild sweet flavor. You like a challenge, so Thai foods are often on the menu in your kitchen. So, in your garden Thai Dragon and heirloom cayenne peppers share space with basil and cilantro for these recipes. While Scorpio tends to appear calm on the surface, you are battling a whirlwind of emotions beneath. As a water sign your garden will grow cucumbers to reflect the “cool as a cucumber” motto. 

 SAGITTARIUS (November 23 to December 21)

Your expectation for change is part of your personality. With Jupiter as your ruling planet, you are partial to plants that grow bigger. Giant sunflowers as well as pole beans and tall vining tomatoes like Gardener’s Delight will climb and tantalize your soul. You are fond of action and the outdoors; plants that spread out and seem wild and free excite you. Look for pumpkin patches and Mortgage Lifter heirloom tomato with their 10-foot vine in your garden. Quick and easy meals such as fresh salad grace your dinner table, so succession planting lettuce, carrots and spinach is your thing. As a fire sign, Sagittarius’ garden is full of plants that enjoy exploration. Consider the fast-growing sugar snap peas and the tall Arkansas Traveler tomatoes that love to climb.

 CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19)

You are a serious, organized soul, so create successive plantings of radish, carrot and lettuce all season. Summer gardens include pathways between neat rows of climbing pole beans, and cucumbers. As a conscientious and disciplined person, you strive for a long season and a full year; therefore, spinach, and beets grace the fall selections. Capricorn, is from Latin for Goat-horned, so naturally you will enjoy the spicy Goat Horn peppers. The Cow Horn Hot pepper is similar Goat Horn yet less spicy and the sweet Giant Marconi are among Capricorn favorites. You love to plan ahead to maximize output for your summer garden with vertical growers such as zucchini and broccoli.

 AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 19)

You are an extremely independent individual; you favor easy-care plants. Pumpkins and squashes meander alongside your walkways and patios. Snow peas can be found climbing radiantly up your porch railings. The annual scattering of wildflowers and herbs; cilantro, echinacea, and, marigolds brings immense joy to your heart while you create a pollinator garden. Your quirky, colorful design layout will support local wildlife and the ecosystem. Favorite foods to grow include Hatch green chile, New Yorker tomatoes, lettuce, radishes and corn.

 PISCES (February 20 to March 20)

You are a water sign and It should not be a surprise that you gravitate to watermelons: Sugar Baby and Georgia Rattlesnake. In fact, all the melons are a safe bet for Pisces including Hale’s Best Jumbo Cantaloupe. Pisceans possess a sense of creativity, so look for a rainbow of color in their front and back gardens. Red Habanero, Purple Cayenne pepper, yellow Biquinho pepper, Orange Spice Jalapeno and Santa Fe Grande peppers create a beautiful eye-catching garden. Parsley, peas, pumpkins, and purple Black Krim tomatoes always find a way into your garden year after year.
