You can start green onion seeds using the Winter Sowing Method!
Winter sowing is an easy and low-cost technique that produces strong onion seedlings. Here are some tips for winter sowing green onion seeds:
You can use a recycled container with holes for drainage and ventilation, like a vinegar/water/milk jug or plastic salad container. Scatter the onion seeds on top of a 3-4" layer of well-draining & pre-moistened seed starting mix (don't use garden soil!) Cover the seeds with another ½ inch of the seed starting mix, water well, and put the top on. However, be sure to leave the lid off – and/or have some sort of hole at the top of the container to let excess heat out and let the seedlings breathe. If you put a lid on the container and there is no way for the steam to escape you will cook your seeds and seedlings!
Put the container outdoors in part/full sun and make sure to keep it watered as the growing mix dries out. In spring, once the onions have sprouted, you can trim them down to about 2" and then gently separate and transplant them into the garden.
Winter sowing is awesome as it creates a free "mini-greenhouse" that you can keep outdoors to start seeds. With winter sowing, there is no need for added heat, indoor room or lights!
